Blokes and Birds – Our Review

Searching for traditional British comfort food? If so, Blokes & Birds is the Chicago based eatery for you. While the drafts available are a bit Euro-heavy, there are dozens of different options to choose from. If you are searching for more than just something to drink, you’re in luck, as well, since this restaurant offers a full menu.

Atmosphere and Environment

Classy, yet causal, this is a great eatery for date night or for a night out with the guys (or girls). The wood paneled walls make it homely and comfortable, without seeming too over the top. Their premises are kept impeccably clean by their dedicated cleaning staff. You can find a laid back atmosphere, which will make you comfortable to have a drink or too, but the food is beyond delicious with a number of British dishes, inspired by Indian spices.

What to Try?

If you are looking for some new and exciting dishes to try during your visit the Blokes & Birds, consider the port tenderloin featuring mango chutney, the mussels in a somewhat spicy vindaloo sauce or deviled beef and curry. However, if you are looking for something in the traditional realm of British fare, don’t fret, there is plenty to choose from. You can enjoy the shepherd’s pie that is full of generous chunks of stout-braised lamb, or the crispy fish and chips platter with a number of different dipping sauces to choose from.

Chances are, any and everything you try at Blokes & Birds is going to provide you with a solid rendition of traditional British fare. You can choose from classic options such as potato and oatmeal soup or to the more unique dishes of minted peas. If you are really feeling brave, give the lobster deviled eggs featuring tobiko caviar a try. Keep in mind, this comes at a price – $12 for just three halves so be sure it is something that sounds appealing prior to ordering.

What to Expect at Blokes & Birds

The generous portions of the dishes make it somewhat difficult to save room for dessert, but it is a good idea to ask for a doggy bag and try some of the sweets offered. The delicate Earl Grey creme brulee goes great with the house-made blood oranges that are infused with cinnamon and vanilla. Chances are, once you try this it will become one of your restaurant favorites.

If this is your first visit to Blokes & Birds, be ready for a pleasant surprise. The atmosphere is warm and welcoming and the food, for the most part, is delicious and affordable. You can enjoy traditional British dishes or more interesting, Indian inspired options. You can also enjoy a number of beer options, which makes the entire dining experience more fun. If you are planning on going on the weekend, it may be a good idea to call ahead, since this has become a pretty popular eatery for Friday and Saturday nights. During the week; however, you shouldn’t have much trouble getting a table.
